Crispy Fried Mushrooms

Ingredients

  • 1 pound button mushrooms, cleaned and stems removed
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 cup cold club soda or beer (for a beer batter option)
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Chopped parsley for garnish (optional)

Preparation

1. Prepare the Mushrooms:

Begin by thoroughly patting the mushrooms dry with paper towels. This step is crucial to ensure the batter sticks well to the mushrooms.

2. Prepare the Batter:

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.

Gradually whisk in the cold club soda or beer until the mixture is smooth and has a consistency similar to pancake batter.

3. Heat the Oil:

Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or heavy-bottomed pan to 350°F (175°C). To check if the oil is ready, drop a small amount of batter into the oil; it should sizzle and rise to the surface immediately.

4. Fry the Mushrooms:

One by one, dip each mushroom into the batter, ensuring it is completely coated.

Carefully place the coated mushrooms into the hot oil. Fry in small batches to prevent overcrowding, which can lower the oil temperature and result in soggy mushrooms.

Fry each batch for about 3-5 minutes, or until the mushrooms are golden brown and crispy.

Remove the mushrooms from the oil using a slotted spoon and drain them on a plate lined with paper towels.

5. Serve:

If desired, garnish with freshly chopped parsley.

Serve the fried mushrooms immediately with a side of your favorite dipping sauce, such as ranch dressing or aioli.

Enjoy your perfectly crispy fried mushrooms! If you have any further questions, feel free to ask.
