Classic Homemade Bread: Simple, Soft, and Delicious

Introduction

Classic homemade bread is one of the most satisfying kitchen projects you can take on.
With just a few simple ingredients—flour, water, yeast, sugar, and salt—you can create a soft, warm loaf
that fills your home with an irresistible aroma. This beginner-friendly recipe is perfect for sandwiches,
toast, or enjoying warm with butter.

Ingredients

  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour (more as needed)
  • 1 cup warm water (about 43°C / 110°F)
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a large bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit 5–10 minutes until frothy.
  2. Make the dough: Add melted butter and salt. Stir in flour gradually until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough: Transfer to a floured surface. Knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. First rise: Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl. Cover and let rise 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. Shape the loaf: Punch down the dough. Shape into a loaf and place in a greased 9×5 loaf pan.
  6. Second rise: Cover and let rise 30–45 minutes until the dough rises just above the pan.
  7. Bake: Preheat oven to 175°C (350°F). Bake 30–35 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
  8. Cool: Let the bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.

Description

This classic loaf is soft, slightly sweet, and perfect for everyday use. It has a tender crumb, a light golden
crust, and holds up beautifully whether you slice it thick or thin. The simplicity of the ingredients makes the
flavor clean and comforting—the perfect homemade bread.

Tips

  • If the dough feels too sticky, add flour 1 tablespoon at a time.
  • For a richer loaf, substitute milk for the water.
  • Brush the top with melted butter after baking for a softer crust.
  • Let the bread cool completely before slicing for clean cuts.
  • Use bread flour if you want a chewier texture.

Correction

  • Make sure your water is warm, not hot. Hot water will kill the yeast.
  • Don’t add too much flour; slightly sticky dough makes softer bread.
  • Avoid over-baking: check for doneness at 30 minutes.

Enjoy

Slice and enjoy with butter, honey, jam, or use it for sandwiches. Warm, soft, and wonderfully simple—this bread
is guaranteed to become a kitchen favorite!
