They’re called “Angel Biscuits” for a reason—one bite and you’ll feel like you’ve floated straight to biscuit heaven! These beloved Southern-style biscuits are known for their soft, airy texture and buttery flavor. Ideal for breakfast, brunch, or as a side dish, this recipe combines the best of traditional biscuits and yeast rolls into one divine bite.

Ingredients

Ingredient Quantity
All-purpose flour 5 cups
Sugar 1/4 cup
Baking soda 1 teaspoon
Baking powder 3 teaspoons
Salt 2 teaspoons
Active dry yeast 1 package (1/4 oz)
Warm water (110–115°F) 1/4 cup
Shortening 1 cup
Buttermilk 2 cups
Melted butter For brushing

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dry ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until it foams.
  3. Cut in the shortening: Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, cut the shortening into the dry mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Mix the dough: Add the yeast mixture and buttermilk to the bowl. Stir until well combined. The dough will be slightly sticky.
  5. Knead and cut: Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead gently for 1–2 minutes. Roll to 1/2-inch thickness and cut with a biscuit cutter.
  6. Let rise: Place biscuits on a greased baking sheet. Cover and let rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes.
  7. Bake: Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Bake for 12–15 minutes or until golden brown.
  8. Finish and serve: Remove from oven and brush with melted butter. Serve warm.

Tips for Success

  • Use chilled shortening for extra flakiness.
  • Handle the dough gently to avoid tough biscuits.
  • Biscuits can be frozen after baking and reheated when needed.

Whether paired with honey, jam, or gravy, these Angel Biscuits are sure to become a family favorite. Enjoy!
