Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 package (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm milk (approximately 110°F)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon water (for egg wash)

Preparation

  1. Prepare the Dough:

    • In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of the flour, sugar, salt, and yeast.
    • Add the warm milk, melted butter, and eggs. Mix until the ingredients are well incorporated.
    • Gradually add the remaining flour, about 1/2 cup at a time, until the dough forms and is slightly sticky.
  2. Knead the Dough:

    • Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
    • Incorporate the chocolate chips into the dough, kneading until they are evenly distributed.
  3. First Rise:

    • Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, or until it doubles in size.
  4. Shape the Buns:

    • Punch down the risen dough and place it on a floured surface.
    • Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces, shaping each piece into a ball.
    • Arrange the dough balls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, ensuring they are spaced about 2 inches apart.
  5. Second Rise:

    • Cover the dough balls with a clean kitchen towel and let them rise for 30-45 minutes, or until they double in size.
  6. Preheat the Oven:

    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  7. Egg Wash:

    • In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and water to create the egg wash.
    • Gently brush the tops of the risen buns with the egg wash.
  8. Bake the Buns:

    • Bake the buns in the preheated oven for 15-18 minutes, or until they are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  9. Cool and Serve:

    • Allow the buns to cool on a wire rack.
    • Serve them warm or at room temperature.
