Classic Cornbread Dressing

Introduction

Classic Cornbread Dressing is a timeless comfort-food favorite, especially loved during holidays
and family gatherings. Made with crumbly cornbread, savory vegetables, warm herbs, and rich broth,
this dish delivers a moist, flavorful side that pairs beautifully with roasted meats and festive meals.

Ingredients

  • 6 cups crumbled cornbread (preferably day-old)
  • 2 cups dried bread cubes or biscuits (optional, for texture)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 celery stalks, finely chopped
  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • 2–3 cups chicken or turkey broth (warm)

  • Optional: chopped fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a baking dish.
  2. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion and celery and sauté until soft and fragrant.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine crumbled cornbread and bread cubes.
  4. Pour the sautéed vegetables and melted butter over the bread mixture.
  5. Add salt, pepper, sage, thyme, and poultry seasoning. Mix gently.
  6. Stir in the beaten eggs, then gradually add warm broth until the mixture is moist but not soupy.
  7. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish and spread evenly.
  8. Bake uncovered for 40–45 minutes, or until the top is golden and the center is set.

Description

This Classic Cornbread Dressing is soft and savory on the inside with a lightly crisp top.
The combination of herbs and buttery vegetables creates a comforting aroma and rich flavor
that brings traditional Southern cooking to the table.

Tips

  • Use day-old cornbread for the best texture.
  • Add broth slowly to avoid an overly wet dressing.
  • For extra richness, replace part of the broth with milk or cream.
  • Bake uncovered during the final minutes for a crispier top.

Correction

  • If the dressing is too dry, drizzle with warm broth and cover before reheating.
  • If it is too moist, bake uncovered for an additional 10–15 minutes.
  • Always taste and adjust seasoning before baking.
