Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 egg
- 1/3 cup bread crumbs
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp oil
- 1 1/2 cups thinly sliced onion
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1/2 tsp salt
Preparation
- Combine Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, egg, bread crumbs, black pepper, 1 tsp salt, onion powder, minced garlic, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix thoroughly and shape into thick patties.
- Cook Patties: Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and sliced onions to the skillet, cooking until the patties are well-browned on both sides. Remove the patties from the skillet and keep them warm on a plate.
- Prepare Gravy: Sprinkle the flour over the onions and the drippings left in the skillet. Stir the flour into the onions with a fork, ensuring you scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet. Gradually add the beef broth, mixing continuously. Season with the remaining salt. Simmer the mixture over medium-low heat for about 5 minutes, until the gravy thickens.
- Simmer Patties in Gravy: Reduce the heat to low, return the patties to the skillet, cover, and simmer for an additional 15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the patties to soak up the gravy.
