A festive, flavorful spread perfect for the holiday season. Enjoy on toast, scones, or as a thoughtful homemade gift!

Ingredients

  • 2 apples, peeled, cored, and chopped
  • 1 orange, zested and juiced
  • 2½ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 4 cups mixed berries (cranberries, raspberries, strawberries) – fresh or frozen
  • ½ tsp ground cloves
  • ½ tsp ground nutmeg
  • ½ tsp ground ginger
  • ¼ tsp allspice (optional)
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 packet powdered pectin (optional, for a firmer texture)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Fruit

  1. Chop the berries and apples into small pieces if using fresh fruit. Add them to a large pot.
  2. Add the orange juice and zest for a citrusy touch.

Step 2: Cook the Fruit

  1. Bring the fruit mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat and simmer for 10-15 minutes until softened.
  2. Mash the fruit with a potato masher or fork to your preferred consistency.

Step 3: Add Spices and Sugar

  1. Stir in the cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, ginger, and allspice.
  2. Add the sugar and stir until dissolved. Return the mixture to a boil.

Step 4: Add Pectin (Optional)

  1. If desired, add powdered pectin according to the packet instructions and boil for an additional 1-2 minutes.
  2. Stir in lemon juice to balance the sweetness.

Step 5: Test the Jam

  1. Place a small spoonful of jam on a cold plate. If it wrinkles when pushed, it’s ready.
  2. Let the jam cool slightly and transfer to sterilized jars.

Step 6: Store or Can the Jam

  • Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks.
  • Follow proper canning procedures for longer storage.

Tips

  • Adjust Spices: Customize spice levels to your liking. Try adding star anise for extra festivity.
  • Gift Idea: Decorate jars with holiday-themed labels and ribbons.
  • No Pectin: If skipping pectin, cook the jam longer to thicken naturally.
