Indian Frybread Recipe
Ingredients:
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons powdered milk
- 1 1/2 cups warm water
- 1 cup shortening
- Extra flour for handling the dough
Instructions:
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and powdered milk.
- Gradually add the warm water, mixing continuously until a dough forms.
- Lightly flour your hands and knead the dough until it is soft and pliable, but not sticky. Cover with a cloth and let it rest for 15 minutes.
- Divide the dough into balls, each approximately 2 inches in diameter. Flatten each ball by patting and stretching until it reaches a desired thickness.
- Heat the shortening in a frying pan to a depth of about 1 inch. Once hot, carefully place the flattened dough into the pan.
- Fry the dough until the underside is golden brown, then flip and cook the other side until similarly browned.
- Serve warm with your choice of toppings such as honey, powdered sugar, or for a savory option, cooked sausage or a fried egg.
Enjoy your homemade frybread!
