Ingredients:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons powdered milk
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1 cup shortening
  • Extra flour for handling the dough

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and powdered milk.
  2. Gradually add the warm water, mixing continuously until a dough forms.
  3. Lightly flour your hands and knead the dough until it is soft and pliable, but not sticky. Cover with a cloth and let it rest for 15 minutes.
  4. Divide the dough into balls, each approximately 2 inches in diameter. Flatten each ball by patting and stretching until it reaches a desired thickness.
  5. Heat the shortening in a frying pan to a depth of about 1 inch. Once hot, carefully place the flattened dough into the pan.
  6. Fry the dough until the underside is golden brown, then flip and cook the other side until similarly browned.
  7. Serve warm with your choice of toppings such as honey, powdered sugar, or for a savory option, cooked sausage or a fried egg.

Enjoy your homemade frybread!
