Make Ahead Sausage Casserole

Make-Ahead Sausage Casserole
Introduction
A Make-Ahead Sausage Casserole is the perfect breakfast solution for busy mornings,
holiday gatherings, or meal prep. Prepared the night before and baked fresh in the
morning, it delivers all the comforting flavors of sausage, eggs, cheese, and bread
in one warm and satisfying dish. This recipe is easy, hearty, and guaranteed to bring
everyone to the table.
Ingredients
For the Casserole:
- 1 lb (450g) breakfast sausage
- 8 large eggs
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (optional)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- 6 cups cubed day-old bread
- 1 ½ cups shredded cheddar cheese
- ½ cup shredded mozzarella or Monterey Jack cheese
- 2 tablespoons chopped parsley (optional)
Instructions
1. Cook the Sausage
In a skillet, cook the breakfast sausage over medium heat until browned and fully cooked.
Drain excess grease and set aside.
2. Prepare the Egg Mixture
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion
powder, and Dijon mustard.
3. Assemble the Casserole
Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Spread the cubed bread evenly in the dish.
Sprinkle the cooked sausage over the bread, then add the shredded cheeses.
Pour the egg mixture evenly over the top, pressing the bread gently so it absorbs the liquid.
4. Refrigerate Overnight
Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap or foil and refrigerate for at least 4 hours,
preferably overnight.
5. Bake the Next Morning
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the casserole from the fridge and
let it rest at room temperature for 20 minutes. Bake uncovered for 45–55 minutes,
or until golden and set in the center. Allow to cool slightly before serving.
Description
This Make-Ahead Sausage Casserole is warm, savory, cheesy, and incredibly comforting.
The bread absorbs the creamy egg mixture and bakes into a fluffy, soufflé-like texture,
while the sausage delivers flavor in every bite. It’s ideal for holidays, brunch gatherings,
or weekly meal prep.
Tips
- Use slightly stale bread for better absorption.
- Mix cheese varieties like Swiss, pepper jack, or gouda for extra flavor.
- Add veggies such as onions, bell peppers, spinach, or mushrooms.
- Use turkey sausage and low-fat milk for a lighter version.
- Use half-and-half for a richer casserole.
- Ensure the center is set before removing from the oven.
Correction
If the casserole is soggy:
- Reduce the milk slightly next time.
- Add more bread cubes.
- Bake 5–10 minutes longer.
If the casserole is dry:
- Increase milk by ¼ cup.
- Cover with foil for the last 15 minutes of baking.
