Patty Melt Recipe
Ingredients:
- 2 pounds ground beef
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ cup butter, divided
- 1 extra-large sweet onion, peeled and sliced into thin strips
- 12 slices thick-cut sandwich bread (Texas toast)
- 6 slices American cheese
- 6 slices Swiss cheese
- 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
- Caramelize the Onions: In a large sauté pan or skillet over medium heat, add 4 tablespoons of butter. Once the butter is melted, add the sliced onions. Season the onions generously with salt and pepper, then lower the heat to medium-low. Stir the onions occasionally and cook them for 15 to 20 minutes, until they become soft and caramelized. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Prepare the Beef Patties: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef with Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, 1 teaspoon of salt, and ½ teaspoon of cracked black pepper. Use your hands to mix the seasonings evenly into the meat. Press the seasoned meat into the bottom of the bowl, then use a butter knife to divide it into six equal portions. Shape each portion into a flat oval patty, slightly larger than your bread slices, as the patties will shrink when cooked.
- Prepare the Bread and Mustard: Lay out the 12 slices of sandwich bread. Spread a generous teaspoon of yellow mustard on six of the slices, which will form the base for each patty melt.
- Cook the Patties: Preheat a griddle or large skillet over medium heat. Carefully place the patties on the griddle or skillet, working in batches if needed. Cook the patties for 3 minutes per side. After flipping the patties, place an equal amount of caramelized onions on top of each one, spreading the onions evenly to cover the meat. Layer one slice of American cheese and one slice of Swiss cheese on top of each patty. Continue cooking until the patties have cooked for a total of about 6 minutes.
- Assemble the Patty Melts: Transfer each loaded patty to the mustard-coated slices of bread, cheese side up.
- Toast the Patty Melts: Wipe the griddle with a paper towel. Add 2 tablespoons of butter to the griddle and spread it around. Place the assembled patty melts on the griddle, then cover each with an additional slice of bread. Toast the bread for 2 to 3 minutes, until it turns golden brown. If necessary, lower the heat to medium-low to avoid burning. Once ready to flip, add the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter to the griddle and flip the patty melts over. Toast the second side for another 2 to 3 minutes.
- Serve: Transfer the patty melts to a cutting board with the cheese on top of the patties. Cut each patty melt in half and serve immediately. Enjoy your perfectly toasted, cheesy patty melt!
