Cheesy Potato Balls Recipe

Introduction: Cheesy potato balls are a delicious snack or appetizer, combining the creamy texture of mashed potatoes with the richness of cheese. This recipe is perfect for parties, gatherings, or even as a savory treat for yourself. The crispy, golden coating contrasts beautifully with the soft, cheesy interior, making it a crowd favorite. Follow this simple yet flavorful recipe to create cheesy potato balls that everyone will love.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups mashed potatoes (about 2-3 large potatoes)
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or your choice)
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup green onions or chives, chopped (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (panko or regular)
  • 1-2 eggs, beaten (for binding)
  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Mashed Potatoes: Ensure your mashed potatoes are smooth and well-seasoned. Leftover mashed potatoes work perfectly for this recipe, or you can make a fresh batch.
  2. Mix the Filling: In a large mixing bowl, combine the mashed potatoes, shredded cheese, Parmesan cheese, green onions or chives (if using), garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Stir well until all ingredients are evenly incorporated, creating a flavorful, cheesy potato mixture.
  3. Form the Potato Balls: Scoop out small portions of the mixture and roll them into balls, roughly 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter. Continue forming balls until all the mixture is used.
  4. Coat the Potato Balls: Set up a breading station by placing the beaten eggs in one bowl and the breadcrumbs in another. Dip each potato ball into the egg mixture, ensuring it’s fully coated, and then roll it in the breadcrumbs until evenly covered.
  5. Fry the Potato Balls: In a deep skillet or pot, heat oil over medium heat to approximately 350°F (175°C). Carefully place the potato balls in the hot oil in small batches. Fry each batch for 3-4 minutes, or until the balls are golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to remove the balls and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  6. Serve: Serve the cheesy potato balls warm, accompanied by your favorite dipping sauces like ranch, marinara, or sour cream.

Tips:

  • For extra flavor, consider adding cooked bacon or ham into the potato mixture.
  • If you prefer a healthier option, bake the potato balls. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C), place the balls on a baking sheet, spray them lightly with oil, and bake for 20-25 minutes until crispy and golden.
