Creamy Au Gratin Potatoes Recipe

Creamy Au Gratin Potatoes

Ingredients:

  • 2 pounds of potatoes (Yukon Gold or Russet), peeled and thinly sliced
  • 3/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh rosemary for garnish

Preparation:

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Prepare the Potatoes:
    • Thinly slice the potatoes, aiming for about 1/8 inch thickness. Using a mandoline slicer can help achieve uniform slices.
  3. Make the Cheese Sauce:
    • In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
    • Add the minced garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute.
    • Stir in the heavy cream and whole milk, mixing well.
    • Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then add the shredded cheddar and grated Parmesan. Stir continuously until the cheese melts and the sauce thickens.
    • Season with ground nutmeg, salt, and pepper to taste.
  4. Assemble the Dish:
    • Lightly grease a baking dish with butter or non-stick cooking spray.
    • Arrange half of the potato slices in the bottom of the dish, pressing them down slightly.
    • Pour half of the cheese sauce evenly over the potatoes.
    • Add the remaining potato slices on top, then cover with the remaining cheese sauce.
  5. Bake the Potatoes:
    • Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes.
    • Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 25 to 30 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden and bubbly.
  6. Garnish and Serve:
    • Allow the dish to cool for a few minutes before serving.
    • Garnish with fresh rosemary.

Tips:

  • Enhance the Flavor: For a richer taste, consider adding a mix of Gruyère, Swiss, or Fontina cheeses.
  • Add Ingredients: To add depth, layer in caramelized onions or crispy bacon bits between the potato slices.
  • Prevent Over-Browning: If the top begins to brown too quickly, cover it with aluminum foil for the remaining baking time.

Enjoy this creamy and delectable potato gratin, perfect for any gathering!
